What
the Bible Says about Gay Marriage
The Bible and Gay
Marriage
Marriage
in the Bible is described as between a man and a woman
Marriage Is Sacred and Binding
31 “Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces
his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32
But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except
sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a
woman who is divorced commits adultery."
Matthew 5:31-32
Principles of Marriage
1 "Now concerning the things of which you wrote
to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2
Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own
wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3
Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise
also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not
have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the
husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.
5 Do not deprive one another except with consent
for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come
together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of
self-control. 6 But I say this as a concession,
not as a commandment. 7 For I wish that all men
were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in
this manner and another in that. 8 But I say to
the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even
as I am; 9 but if they cannot exercise self-control,
let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
1 Corinthians 7:1-9
Marriage and Divorce
1 Then He arose from there and came to the
region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered
to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again. 2
The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce
his wife?” testing Him. 3 And He answered and said
to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said,
“Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss
her.” 5 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because
of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6
But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and
female.’ 7 ‘For this reason a man shall leave his
father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become
one flesh’;so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9
Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” 10
In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same matter.
11 So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman
divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
Mark 10:1-12
Marriage—Christ
and the Church
22 "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as
to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife,
as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ,
so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave
Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse
her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that
He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or
wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as
their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes
it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we
are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and
be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32
This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular
so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects
her husband.
